MOUNTING

Samples can sometimes be difficult to handle because of their complex shape, their fragility or their small size. Achieving a high quality mount is essential to facilitate the handling, to protect fragile materials but also to obtain good preparation results for polishing and future analysis. The advantages of our processing techniques include eliminating the risk of blistering and edges shrinkage are guaranteed.

MOUNTING MACHINE

In order to cover all the possible requirements involved in the handling of any given sample type, PRESI offers hot mounting and cold mounting machines. In order to preserve the structure and integrity of the sample to be mounted, the most appropriate mounting technique must be determined to achieve the desired results. Cold mounting is recommended for the mounting of individual or series samples, fragile and sensitive to heat. Hot mounting is recommended to achieve a high quality mounts (edge examination, hardness measurements), it offers a greater hardness and allows to control the mounting diameter.

MOUNTING ACCESSORIES

PRESI offers various mounting accessories for its hot mounting press (Mecapress 3). Molds are available in 6 diameters (from 25.4mm to 50mm) as well as the intermediate rams. These rams enable to achieve 2 simultaneous mounts with only one mould. Finally, a recirculating tank / pump of 55L allows to work with a closed circuit cooling.

MOUNTING CONSUMABLES

Cold mounting or hot mounting, these two techniques have their advantages and specificities. PRESI has a wide choice of consumables.

COLD MOUNTING

PRESI offers a wide selection of cold-mounting resins such as acrylic, epoxy or polyester :

  • Epoxy resins are composed of two liquid components: the resin and its hardener. Slightly viscous, they are perfectly transparent. They have a long polymerization time but have the best shrinkage rate and adhere perfectly to most materials.
  • Acrylic resins are composed of two parts: powder and liquid. Easy to use, these resins polymerise quickly and have reduced shrinkage. If needed, a dye can be added to facilitate visual identification of the samples.

PRESI also has many mounting molds of different sizes, with round or rectangular shapes. Several material choices are available: KM 2.0 mold, Teflon mold, rubber silicone mold, polyethylene mold. To facilitate the demolding of the samples, release agent are used by simply spraying into the molds.

HOT MOUNTING

PRESI offers a wide range of phenolic, epoxy, acrylic or allylic hot-mounting resins. Extremely hard, with very low shrink and acid-resistant, hot mounting resins largely eliminate blistering and guarantee edges shrinkage when polishing.
